Styrene is an organic compound with the formula C8H8 that is formed by replacing one hydrogen atom of ethylene with benzene. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. Styrene is a thick, volatile liquid that has a sweet taste, but can become unpleasant at high concentrations. In styrene, the electrons of the vinyl group are conjugated to the benzene ring.
